Description
Abstract Landscape Painting
Artist’s Narrative:
When I looked out at the Austin Bluffs in Colorado, I was immediately struck by the way the rugged terrain meets the vast, open sky. Specifically, I chose watercolor for this piece because it allowed me to capture the fluid, quality of the light. This quality appears as it rakes across the rock formations.
As a result, the painting feels less like a static map and more like a fleeting moment of mountain quiet.
I worked to balance the soft, bleeding washes of the sky against the more defined, textural details of the bluffs themselves. Meanwhile, the interplay of vibrant oranges and deep turquoises creates a sense of depth. This draws the viewer’s eye through the canyon. Consequently, the piece carries a certain stillness that reminds me of the crisp, high-altitude air of the Colorado landscape.
Ultimately, my goal was to bottle up that feeling of standing on the edge of something ancient. In addition to the visual colors, the signature “Mitzi 2025” marks a specific time. It marks a moment when I felt particularly connected to the spirit of the West.
