Description
Abstract Landscape Painting
Artist’s Narrative:
The first snowfall in the Flint Hills always feels like a secret being whispered across the prairie. I wanted to capture that breathless moment when the heavy, dark clouds of a winter storm begin to break. In that instant, the very last of the sun peeks through the horizon. As a result, you see that brilliant golden glow fighting against the coming cold.
Meanwhile, the white stippling throughout the piece represents those first delicate, biting flakes that haven’t quite covered the earth yet, but are starting to transform the landscape. Furthermore, I used deep, textured greens and rugged browns for the hills to show the strength of the Kansas land beneath the dusting. Consequently, the painting carries a unique tension between the warmth of the light and the chill of the season.
Ultimately, this piece is about the quiet resilience of the prairie. In addition to the visual contrast of light and dark, I hope the layered brushwork makes you feel the crisp air. I also hope you feel that profound silence that only comes when the first snow begins to fall.
